After moving to Bulgaria in 2011, I oversaw the building of a large wooden framed greenhouse, stone animal houses, a BBQ area, garage and woodstore. In doing so, I learned enough Bulgarian to help other expats, who had already bought houses nearby, with translating their wishes to local builders.

During project managing renovations, rebuilds, and repairs (including my own house), I leaned a lot about stone houses, damp and how these old buildings are not suitable for modern materials.

I also designed bespoke wooden furniture, hand-made by local craftsmen, for my house and other homes.

I fell in love with Bulgaria the first time I visited and Meli helped find me an old house with amazing views. The ceiling was so low the roof had to be taken off but this enabled me to change the layout and build the house of my dreams. I couldn’t have done it without her.

Meli, it has been gorgious: We came along with our Peace-train from Berlin to Jerusalem, were looking for a place to stay overnight and you came and opened your lovely house for us; All of our 8 horses found their slot in your garden and we had an unforgettable encounter in the midst of Bulgaria.

Melis mountain guest house was a great find. She and her cat and two dogs Bella and Lapi are so welcoming.

It’s a fantastic spot set in a small rural village at the foothills of the Rhodopes. A quick drive and you are surrounded by yet more breathtaking mountain vista and history!

It’s been a great location to be based at while I continue to build up my ‘destination wedding business’ in this preferred area of Bulgaria.

We went to see a few houses before I found the right one – but in reality not many, considering I am hard to please! Everything was straightforward with the purchase and much easier to do than I imagined. Now I’m really enjoying the peace and quiet of Bulgaria.

We rented the top floor for 5 months through the winter time. Its lovely place and Meli the owner is amazing host. Meli helped us with getting residency and purchasing a house, finding solicitor, translator and also dealing with changing ownership of electricity and water. Meli has a big knowledge about Bulgarian houses and conditions of those houses. It was the best decision to rent that place from Meli because the whole process of looking for our own house was without stress. We highly recommend to anyone who wants to come to Bulgaria and try village life for a while.
